Strength and Comfort for the Afflicted
by Sammy Tippit

"My soul weeps because of grief; strengthen me according to Thy word ...O may Thy lovingkindness comfort me, according to Thy word to Thy servant" (Ps. 119:28, 76).

John Wesley was a man of the Bible. He once said, "Oh, give me that book! At any price give me the book of God...Let me be a man of one book."

Why was that book of such great importance to Wesley? For one thing, it gave great strength and comfort to him and to many of his followers during the most difficult times. Wesley also said, "Our people did well! The world may find fault with our opinions, but the world cannot deny that our people did well." In other words, that Book not only gave Wesley the strength to live in the grace of God, but also to die in His grace. During the deepest times of sorrow, Wesley found that the Bible pointed him to the true source of strength and comfort.
